Here we provide some examples of various styles of the letter P
These are some typical capital letter P's. There are quite large variations in the formation of the capital letter P, mainly caused by how loopy the strokes are.
They vary from a pronounced upper loop with the initial stroke as part of it, to a widely looping initial stroke, with virtually no upper loop at all
The first example here shows just such a missing upper loop, followed by a much smoother single stroke capital P
Finally some more conventional capital P's which are more like what we see today, though all of these examples were actually written in the same census records from 1891.
Seeing the letters on their own like this does not always give the best representation of them.
